About
Dr Jennifer Steans
I am a UK trained forensic psychologist (HCPC and BPS registered). I gained my doctorate in forensic psychology in 2015 and I have over ten years of experience working with a wide range of people and psychological needs. I work with clients from diverse backgrounds and try to proactively work with the particular challenges clients may face depending on their ethnicity, nationality, race, gender, sexual orientation, religion/belief system and disability. My specialist areas are trauma (including complex PTSD) and working with neurodivergent clients (either formally or self-diagnosed). My work within secure units and prisons has offered me the ability to work compassionately with complexity and long-standing difficulties, including personality difficulties/disorders.
I work using an integrated approach. In addition to my training as a psychologist and EMDR therapist, I integrate internal family systems therapy and person-centred therapy. My values are those of non-judgement, empathy, integrity and honesty within the therapeutic relationship. I like to work in a collaborative way, and I value feedback.
The specific structure of therapy differs for each client although broadly speaking I follow Judith Herman’s three-stage recovery approach to trauma: 1. stabilisation and safety 2. processing, and 3. integration. Stabilisation and safety involves firstly building a safe and trusting relationship between client and therapist, psychoeducation regarding symptoms and strengthening internal and external resources to improve emotion regulation. Processing involves looking more deeply at difficult memories or beliefs to help understand and consolidate them. This may include EMDR or talking therapy. The final stage, integration, focuses on reconnecting with yourself and others and moving forward through life in a meaningful way.
I work with clients for both short and long term therapy and I am happy to work on specific issues or in a more explorative way. I work online or in person in Beeston, Nottingham. I offer a free 15 minute call for further information.
